Shapes

Today we went over and learned about geometric shapes. As a whole group, we discussed circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, ovals, hearts and pentagons. Friends gave their observations, and described the attributes of each shape. We compared their similarities and differences, and friends gave very useful information pertaining to the shapes' properties; sides, corners, and length. Friends learned a fancy word for a diamond: rhombus.

Some of the discussion went as follows:

Ovals look like stretched out circles
Squares and rectangles have four sides
Squares and rectangles are the same but have different sizes
Half of a circle is called a semicircle

Ask your Sparrow what another word is for a diamond.

To continue learning about shapes properties, friends used the wooden shapes to build with during choice time. This helped friends to practice their spatial awareness as well.

The structure above is "City Hall."

Dramatic play.
Cooking and serving up all types of yummy food.

Lately we have been having a lot discussions about peace, and the Quaker values. Today we worked on a classroom community project, creating a giant peace sign on a large canvas. Stay tuned for the finished project next week!
