Clouds and Colors

Over in dramatic play this morning, friends got together for lunch. One of the Sparrow's prepared "carrots, cupcakes, and all the foods."

Today we continued working on our peace canvas. Each friend had their hand painted, and then pressed it onto the canvas to leave their handprint and peaceful thoughts.

We are excited to soon display our peace canvas for all of our friends and family to see!

Friends worked together to build intricate train tracks for their train cars to ride.

Following our morning meeting, friends got right into our weather study. Continuing with our Question of the Day: Is today cloudy or sunny? we discussed the cloudy weather outside. Being that today was cloudy, we only deemed it appropriate to begin our weather study with a lesson and discussion on clouds.

A friend shared that the sun is always out, just the clouds sometimes cover it.

Friends were introduced to three types of clouds: cumulus, cirrus, and stratus.

Together, we looked at pictures of each cloud type and made observations.

Cumulus:  Big, puffy, white clouds. Can look like different animals and shapes.
Cirrus: Wispy, feather-like clouds. Look like paintbrush strokes.
Stratus: Big blanket or sheet looking cloud that covers a large part of the sky.

Following our cloud type group discussion, we went outside for outdoor play. The Sparrows were asked to look up at the sky and observe what type of clouds they could see. Friends immediately pointed out the stratus cloud! This was super exciting from the students' standpoint, as well as the teachers! Much more to come on clouds and our weather study.

Ask your Sparrow what type of cloud(s) is/are outside today (or in the morning!).

We also did a color experiment in class today. We began with each of the primary colors in its own glass jar. We then had a brief discussion on color mixing and secondary colors.

Then we put an empty glass jar in between each filled glass.

Next, we placed a paper towel in each glass until all glasses were connected.

Connection:

Friends connected the experiment to clouds in the way that the paper towels are like clouds; they hold water. We will look deeper into this idea as we dive deeper into our study.

Once the set up of our "color walk" experiment was complete, friends gave their predictions as to what may happen:

Taylor - Fill up and mix colors.
Zoƫ - They're going to suck up the colors.
Zev - I think it's going to come up, fill up, and come down into the bottles.
Thea - The yellow one filled up.
Devin - They're going to fill up and then make different colors.
Yana - The cup is going to fill up.
Shiloh - The yellow is going to fill up and the other colors will fill up.
Seth - The colors are going to fall into the jar.
Natey - The colors will fall down.
