Letters

This morning the Sparrows took part in different literacy centers in the classroom. To begin our literacy work, friends gathered on the rug to watch a video clip about all of the letters in the alphabet and their sounds. After the short video, friends went to the different centers in the room.

At one table was an alphabet matching game. Friends played this game just as you would bingo. A teacher flipped over a card and if a friend had that letter on their board, they would place a shape on top to cover it. Once the board was filled, friends looked through a bin of letters to match the letters to the ones on their board.

At the next table was a letter board game inspired by the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. At this center, a friend would roll a dye, and depending on the number they rolled, count up that many spaces on the coconut tree. Once a friend landed on their space, they identified the letter, uppercase and/or lowercase. To challenge friends, friends were asked to make the letter's sound, identify a word that begins with that letter, and/or a rhyming word to go with the word they chose to represent that letter.

The third center was an alphabet memory game, similar to the card game Old Maid. Cards were placed face down, and friends took turns flipping cards over, trying to find matching letters. This game not only helped build friends letter recognition and sound skills, but memory skills as well.

The Sparrows did a wonderful job staying focused at their centers. These activities helped us practice our letter identification and sound skills, memory and turn taking skills, counting and more. Friends were engaged, and thoroughly enjoyed the literacy activities. After clean up and before it was time for snack, friends asked if we could do this again! We will be having many more centers and workshops throughout the year.

Also today, friends got to work on their different items to go with our classroom alphabet!

During outside time, the Sparrows took a walk over to the field to cheer on the middle schoolers for field day. You could hear friends cheering, "Go white go, go blue go!" Also, there was a lot of fun music playing through the speakers that the Sparrows showed off their dance moves to.

Ask your Sparrow to identify some letters and/or their sounds at home!

Have a fun weekend and enjoy the pictures below!
