Caterpillars, cobblers, and raccoons

This morning the friends walked down to meet Donna for art. In art class today, Donna spoke of primary colors, and explained to the Sparrows that they would be using primary colors to create their own caterpillars on paper. After a brief discussion, friends put on their smocks and went to their designated tables to begin creating.

Friends dipped a big, fluffy pompom into red paint, and then pressed it down onto the yellow paper to create the caterpillars body.

Once complete with the body of the caterpillar, each friend was given a blue pipe cleaner to represent the antennas.

To finish, we put on googly eyes!

We completed the project before art class was over, so we sat down for an extension of the activity. Having discussed primary colors in the beginning of class, friends explored what would happen if we mixed some of the colors. Below you can see how primary colors mixed together create secondary colors.

In between art and music, we had just enough time to squeeze in morning meeting! We went over the daily schedule, calendar, and question of the day. With time to spare, we read The Kissing Hand. Friends noticed in the book that Chester the Raccoon goes to school at night time. We discussed the word nocturnal, what it means, and other animals that are nocturnal.

Music began with free play, which is when friends are free to explore different instruments that Keisha sets out. Following a few minutes of free play, we cleaned up and gathered in circle to sing Jambo, which means hello in Swahili.

Next, friends "met" the cobbler, who helps mend our shoes. Friends sang The Cobbler and followed along with hand motions.

All of the friends gathered in a circle to say their names, and do movement to the syllables in each of their names.

To close music class, we sang the goodbye song and did a cheer. We headed back to our classroom for soft pretzels and apples, and a very silly read aloud. We read Press Here. Friends interacted by following along with the directions in the book. Friends observed that the dots in the book were primary colors! By the end, the dots started to get bigger and bigger, and soon friends noticed that the dots were overlapping to create new colors! This was a very neat observation, being that we had discussed primary colors earlier in the morning!

After some time outside for outdoor play, the Sparrows gathered on the rug to watch and listen to friends' presentations on their collages. Below are pictures of friends who presented today and yesterday.

Some questions to ask your Sparrow:

-What colors are primary colors?
-What does mending mean?
-What does nocturnal mean?
