Today, we had a class discussion about emotions and the different feelings we may feel. To begin our lesson, we looked at the front cover illustration of the book When Sophie Gets Angry- Really, Really Angry... Without saying the title, we asked the Sparrows what they thought of the picture and how the person might look and feel. Unanimously, the response was angry. We then asked friends why do you think the person looks angry and how do you know, which a lot of friends responded with, "Well, she just looks angry."
We talked about different emotions, happy, sad, angry, scared, surprised, tired, and how our faces look when we are feeling these types of ways. Friends pointed out differences with how our smiles, eyes, and noses look when we are feeling different types of emotions.
Friends then shared how they look when they are feeling happy, sad, surprised, and more. Below are friends' angry faces.
When Sophie Gets Angry- Really, Really Angry... is a book about a young girl named Sophie, who is learning to manage her anger. A situation arises between Sophie and her sister, which infuriates her. Sophie goes through the different stages of anger, and soon enough starts to run outside. Sophie finds a calm place to settle herself, which was in a tree listening to the sounds of nature. At the end of the story, Sophie feels better and goes back home, where her family is happy to see her and welcomes her in with open and loving arms.
After listening to the read aloud on the Smartboard, which provided great sound effects, friends were asked what they thought of the story. Some responses were:
"I liked the calming breeze."
"I liked the part where she was alone because she could see the whole entire world."
"I liked when they were pulling the gorilla because it was a little funny, and I liked the breeze."
"I liked when Sophie came back to her family."
Next, friends were asked to think of place they like to go or something they like to do that helps calm them when they're feelings angry, upset, or sad, just how Sophie did in the book.
Below are their responses.
Zoƫ- When mommy cuddles me and kisses and hugs me
Jaylen- Mommy kiss me.
Taylor- When I take a bath and feel the warm water. It helps me calm down.
Devin- Giving a big hug.
Natey- Hugs with my family.
Mya- Mommy give me a kiss and hug and sings to me and rocks me like a little baby.
Seth- When my family gives me a hug.
Thea- Watch videos on mommy's phone.
Lincoln- When Toby gives me a hug.
Zev- When my mommy hugs me.
Yana- My brother gives me a hug.
Following the read aloud and our group discussion, friends washed their hands and got ready for snack, and then went outside for outdoor play.
Back inside the classroom, friends had choice time, during which friends cut pieces string to represent tentacles for the jellyfish they have been creating.
Ask your Sparrow how it looks and/or feels when they feel angry/happy/sad/scared/surprised.
