Fun (and very busy) Friday!

Following sign-in and choice, the Sparrows had morning meeting. We always begin with a moment of shared silence, followed by a friend going over our daily schedule, calendar, weather, and question of the day. Once our morning jobs were complete, we read Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?

There are many different words used to describe weather, and today the Sparrows delved deeper into describing words for several types. We discussed rain, snow, wind, and temperature. The lists are as follows:
Rain: drizzle, rainy, pouring, flood, lightning, thunder
Snow: snowflake, blizzard, snowy
Wind: windy, breezy
Temperature: cold, cool, hot, warm, freezing

Next, friends danced their way over to the Smart Board.

This past week, we spoke about precipitation and evaporation. Listening to the Sparrows use these terms brings much joy! We discussed how the sun heats up water on the ground, which then gets carried up into our atmosphere to form clouds. Then, when clouds cannot hold any more water, rain falls. Friends watched a BrainPop jr. video on the water cycle to help gain a better visual and understanding.

Soon after learning about the water cycle, it was time to...BAKE BANANA BREAD!
(Must say with much emphasis, just like the Sparrows!)

Friends took turns measuring and mixing the ingredients. Each friend had a turn to do a specific job. The Sparrows did a wonderful job taking turns, practicing patience, and using their number and counting skills. We suspect much more cooking/baking in our future!

Once all the ingredients were mixed in, we poured the batter into loaf pans. Following our hard work, each Sparrow was treated to a couple chocolate chips.

The fun did not stop there! We celebrated Thea's birthday with her favorite snacks!
Happy birthday, Thea!

We spent some time outside, running around and making mixtures with wood chips, sand and water. Since today was so cold, we did not spend as much time outside as usual. This left time for us to do a quick experiment. The Sparrows made "A cloud in a jar."

Taking a glass jar, we first poured in hot water. We sealed the lid and friends took turns swirling around the warm water to help heat it up. Next, we flipped over the lid and placed ice cubes on top to represent the cool air up in the atmosphere. We counted to 20, took the lid off, sprayed a bit of hairspray, and then sealed the lid once more. Friends observed the jar beginning to become foggy and cloudy. We again counted together, then took off the lid, and slowly watched the cloud that was formed leave the jar.

The Sparrows had a very busy, fun, and eventful day! All of the Sparrows did an absolute wonderful job participating and cooperating with their friends and taking part in each activity.

Some questions to ask your Sparrow:

What did you enjoy about baking banana bread?
How are clouds formed?
What are some words to describe rain/wind/snow/temperature?
