Letter Monsters

This morning in library, Catherine read us a couple of books. Both books were about monsters. The first story was titled I want a Monster by Elise Gravel, and the second, Marilyn's Monster by Michelle Knudsen.

Friends followed along observing the illustrations and making predictions.

Soon enough it was the Sparrows' turn to look at books around the library, and choose one to check out for the classroom.

Following library, we came back to our classroom for choice time. Friends played together in the dramatic play area, staying in character and using their imaginations to the fullest.

Over in the building area, friends constructed elaborate buildings together.

A few friends joined one another on the rug to complete a large alphabet floor puzzle.

Friends took turns rotating through a literacy center today. In small groups, friends worked on their letter awareness. Using the wooden pieces, each Sparrow had the chance to create a few letters. We focused on L, F, and E; what pieces you need to form the letter (lines/curves), how you write the letter with a pencil, the letter's sound, and words that begin with that letter.

The Sparrows are becoming more comfortable and confident with the Handwriting Without Tears program. We will continue this work throughout the year.

Ask your Sparrow to identify these letters and/or make their sounds.
Great ways to encourage letter awareness and recognition include I Spy games, reading books, and/or looking at food labels.
